Lifetime and monthly prevalence of cigarette smoking has declined in all grades (6-12) between 2000 and 2005. This is especially good news since cigarette smoking is a strong predictor of other drug use, such as marijuana, cocaine, and other illicit drug use. Overall, use of illicit drugs has declined steadily over the past several years (see tables below). Marijuana is still the most widely used illicit drug, with 40.1% of 12th graders reporting having tried it at least once during their lifetime.

Although the number of high school students who report riding with a drunk driver has declined, in 2005, more than one in five high school students still reported riding with a drunk driver during the previous year.
